Rubber band ligation has been used as a surgical approach to the treatments of hemorrhoids for quite some time and depending on the research that you read the success rate ranges from fifty to seventy five percent. In order for a internal hemorrhoid to qualify for this particular surgical procedure it needs to be graded at the second degree mark. Rubber band ligation is normally performed as a day surgery and in the doctors office. The typical recovery period is 3 to 5 days as long as everything runs according to plan.
Hemorrhoid Banding AKA Rubber Band Ligation Procedure
Here is a brief description on how hemorrhoid banding is performed. The patient will lie on their side and be asked to bring their knees up to their chest. With the use of a proctoscope the doctor will insert this tool into the rectum to open up the anal cavity. With a pair of forceps the doctor will align the hemorrhoid up with a nifty tool called the Barron ligator which basically places a small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. The hope is that the rubber band will cut off all of the blood supply to the hemorrhoid and it will in return dry up and fall off. This particular hemorrhoid treatment goes way back and there are literary mentions by Hippocrates talking about tying a hemorrhoid off with a string in order to kill the hemorrhoid. After the procedure is over the patient goes home and is asked to not take any form of Aspirin for at least two weeks as the ingredients in Aspirin actual cause the muscles to swell and contract so the patient is told to use Ibuprofen for their pain relief.
